Fox Corner is located just a short drive from Ambleside with easy access to some of the best fells in the central Lake District. We’ve put together our best walks in the central lakes, just a short drive from our boutique bolthole for two.

Scenic views of Tarn Hows in winter

Tarn Hows

Only 3.5 miles from Fox Corner, Tarn Hows is a lovely circular walk. Around 1.8 miles long, it should take just over an hour to complete with good paths along the whole way. You can extend the route slightly with a little detour to Tom Gill waterfall. Enjoy views across the Langdale Pikes and towards Coniston.

Stunning views of Elterwater and Langdale

Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge

Park in the National Trust car park at Elterwater (only 4 miles from Fox Corner) and enjoy this gentle out-and-back trail to Skelwith Bridge.
Follow the path along Great Langdale Beck to Elterwater and then onto the River Brathay as it passes Skelwith Bridge and enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake at Chesters before you head back.

Loughrigg Fell from Skelwith Bridge

Only a 2.5-mile drive away from Fox Corner, this walk includes one of the lower fells in the area. The 4.5-mile circular walk starts from Skelwith, up to the top of Loughrigg Fell with stunning views across to Grasmere and the Langdale Pikes. Treat yourself to a well-earned pint in the Skelwith Bridge pub before you head back.

Views across hills on a walk in the Lakes

Lingmoor Fell and Side Pike

This 4-mile walk manages to tick off 1 Wainright and 2 Birketts. Starting at the legendary Old Dungeon Ghyll pub in Langdale, the walk does include some hands-on rock scrambling over the ridge of Side Pike but you will be rewarded with stunning views across the Langdale fells and Coniston. A pit stop at the Old Dungeon Ghyll is a must before you leave.

Caves to explore in the Lakes

Elterwater to the Cathedral Chamber

An easy low-level 4.5-mile walk from the village of Elterwater, it offers beautiful views across Litlle Langdale and the chance to visit the impressive Cathedral Cave. Explore the caves and quarry workings before working your way back through Little Langdale and the Three Shires Inn serving great food and a cracking pint.
